Beyond the Walls – The New Covenant What is the new covenant that Jesus is offering to us today? What was the significance of the Last Supper for the people who first heard the Good News? On our second Sunday of our journey toward Easter, let us consider the sacred story of the Last Supper as remembered in the gospel of Luke. Let us share the sacrament of Communion with disciples from around the world as we ponder about this community building tradition. Beyond the Walls – The New Covenant. Born July 14th 1920, Audrey Minota Ridley (nee Shepherdson) passed away peacefully at the Temiskaming Hospital on February 21st 2023 with family by her side -- one day after Family Day, which is fitting since family was the most important thing to Audrey. Having lived to a grand 102 years, Audrey is survived by her daughters and their loving husbands: Carlene (Lloyd) and Wendy (Wayne). As well as her grandchildren: Piper Lee (Trevor), Andy (Tonya), and Carlyanna (Mike). Thanks to her longevity, Audrey had 7 great-grandchildren (Jeremy, Joshua, Madeline, Jaxon, Mikanna, Alicia and Erica), two step-great-grand-children (Hunter, Myles) and 3 great-great-grandchildren. And she will be missed by her surviving siblings: Betty, Clair and Donna and nieces and nephews, including Lori and Kent who visited with her regularly. As the oldest girl of 11 in the Shepherdson family, she outlived many siblings and in-laws and also her husband, Tom. Audrey lived a quiet, contented life. She and Tom moved into the house Tom built in 1941, raised their daughters and lived there together until his death in 1973. Audrey continued to live alone in her marital home. She was a dedicated employee of the Northern and Central Gas company until her retirement at the age of 64 after which she volunteered at the Temiskaming Hospital for many years. She enjoyed tending to her beautiful gardens, knitting, reading romance novels and being an active member of her church. Visiting with family was always a highlight, including many family trips to places like Disney World and the beach. In 2013 Audrey chose to move into Northdale Manor. She thrived at The Manor for many years during which time she took vacations to see her daughters in Florida or many months spent with family in Waterloo. Many thanks go to the caring staff at The Manor including the nurses and PSWs, and especially Audrey's regular PSW Jennifer, who cared for Audrey so well for nearly 10 years and gave her even more care and support over this past year as she became weaker. Audrey was so easy to be around. She was contented, easy-going and had a great sense of humour. She loved flowers (especially pansies and lilacs), plants and birds and kept her body active with swimming for many years and her mind active with puzzles, crosswords, and Sudoku. Her family loved playing games like Rummikub and Dominoes with her right until the end. Her last Rummikub games, only a few weeks before her death, were with her 2 daughters and Audrey won 2 out of 4 games! Her family was so thankful and blessed that Audrey kept her mind and quick wit the full length of her life. Audrey was organized and fashionable. She had a mathematical mind and an amazing memory. She kept up with family by email on her laptop until the end of her life. When asked what invention most changed her life over her 102 years, her surprising answer was 'plastic' for food storage among other uses. Practical and useful, two of Audrey's values. Her simple and loving life has been inspirational to so many. If you want to remember Audrey, and maybe absorb some of her 'content with life as it is' kind of way, you can take a break on her bench located right next to the snack bar on the boardwalk on the shore of Lake Temiskaming. The bench was placed by her family in honor of her 100th birthday almost three years ago. The plaque on the bench is from a verse that was meaningful to Audrey. It reads "Old enough to be wise and young enough to be glad." A celebration of life will be held on August 9th 2023 for family and friends at Community of Christ Church in New Liskeard. If you’d like to send any well wishes ahead of time, they can be sent to Perrin Funeral Home, New Liskeard or emailed to Audrey’s daughter Carlene at [email protected]. Our theme is “A House of Prayer.” After his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Jesus spent time teaching in the Temple. In a famous incident, he overturned the tables of the Temple money changers saying, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers’.” (Luke 19:46). What is the purpose of the temple? How can we as disciples spread around the world continue to become a people of the temple? Beyond the Walls – A House of Prayer. We hope to see you there on Sunday, February 26, at 12:00 PM or 6:00 PM EST. SLIM (Sharing Love in Mission) - 1:45 p.m. Tracy Miller from Lakeland Florida will preside over the worship and our guest will be Chicago Mission Centre President and Mission Centre Financial Officer Blake Smith. Beyond the Walls – Breaking the Cycle Jesus taught us to pray that God’s will may one day be done on earth as it is in heaven. And yet human history reads like an endless cycle of violence and war. This legacy is apparent as we broadcast again this week from Seville, in Andalusia, Spain. Seville is an ancient city that has been conquered in turn by the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Vandals, the Visigoths, and the Islamic Caliphate, before its final reconquest by the Christian Kingdom of Castille in 1248. With Spain’s further conquests in the Western hemisphere, the city became the center of the Empire’s trade, as the treasures from the New World poured into the Old. Despite Jesus’ teaching that God’s heavenly kingdom is peaceable, Christians have perpetrated much violence in Christ’s name. Join us as we reflect on our complex legacy and consider how we can work to “break the cycle” of violence that we have inherited. Beyond the Walls – Breaking the Cycle. We are looking forward to many wonderful camping experiences this summer, An important part of that experience for many is water activities. This requires properly trained and certified lifeguards. We are reaching out to you to help us find those persons.
Please see attachments outlining the job postings for our Lifeguard Team and share this information with your circle of influence via email, in person, or online. We need your help to get these job postings known in our communities. Lifeguards do not have to be members of Community of Christ, however, they do need to be a Registered Youth Worker. If they do not have this certification, we may be able to have them qualified via an online short course before camps begin. Please reach out to our Camping Team with any questions or suggestions asap. As an artist, musician, friend, storyteller, and as a professor of Indigenous Studies at Nipissing University, he brought gentle kindness and a tricksterish sense of humour to everything he did. Of his many accomplishments, he never let us forget that he was proudest of us, his children Tanis (Allan), Erin (Joseph), Tyler (Christine) and grandchildren Ezmae, Odeima, Ewan, and Niganii. Together we have vowed to him that we will carry on his legacy and do our best, as he did, to exemplify the seven grandfather teachings: Love, Respect, Bravery, Truth, Honesty, Humility and Wisdom. Terry was the dear son of the late Elizabeth Dokis (nee Couchie) and the late John Dokis. Survived by his brothers Jerome and Leslie, he is predeceased by his sister Lillian and brothers Gerald and Ronald. Our family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. O’Grady as well as everyone at the North Bay Serenity Hospice for the gentle and compassionate care given to Terry and to us. We welcome expressions of sympathy in the form of donations to the Hospice and its exceptional team. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Services in North Bay and on Wednesday, February 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Centre at Dokis First Nation. Ceremony and burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. Terry was very instrumental in Indian/Native Ministries at the Native Cultural Camps for youth that were held at Camp Noronto in the 1980's and '90's. He was descirbed as a very humble and talented man. Beyond the Walls – A Global Community
Join us as we receive ministry from Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Oceania, South America, and North America, celebrating our global community. Christ’s first disciples took as their commission to preach the good news to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. As we draw the circle ever wider, we are able to hear voices with backgrounds and perspectives different from our own, challenging our expectations, and provoking us to continually learn and grow together. The restoring of persons to healthy or righteous relationships with God, others, themselves and the earth is at the heart of the purpose of your journey as a people of faith” Doctrine and Covenants 163:b
How each congregation achieves that is as unique as the individuals being discipled in that community. How do we bring hope where there is none? How do we address poverty and needless suffering? How do we confront prejudice and greed? How do we share Christ’s gospel of love and peace and justice? How do we find the kernels of wisdom in our common human heritage with one another? Recent services on World Religion Day in London and Barrie, brought together persons from differing faiths who agreed that we need to love and serve one another. It is not an “us” or “them” situation. That if we stop fighting our differences, but instead embrace our common goal, together we can work toward peace and justice. Let’s celebrate some initiatives that individuals within Community of Christ are doing toward that: Teresa Fryer of North Bay recently traveled to El Salvador to teach women how to sew. Her friend Dulcie Shepherdson is there teaching English. Pat MacGregor opened the Sarnia church for donations of clothing and personal care items for the 120 seniors who were abruptly evacuated from their home late one Friday evening in January due to a fire. The community responded abundantly. The St Thomas congregation held a $2 dinner reaching out to community groups with the greatest need. The Woodfield congregation reaches out to bring care packages to individuals who are reintegrating into society after incarceration. “God’s grace, revealed in Jesus Christ, freely moves throughout creation, often beyond human perception, to achieve divine purposes in people’s lives … As revealed in Christ Jesus, God, the creator of all, ultimately is concerned about behaviours and relationships that uphold the worth and giftedness of all people and that protect the most vulnerable. Such relationships are to be rooted in the principles of Christ-like love, mutual respect, responsibility, justice, covenant and faithfulness, against which there is no law (D&C 164:2b,6a) May we all seek to alleviate needless suffering and bring hope where there is none. May we all strive toward relationships that respect and uphold the worth of others. And may we embody peace and justice individually and collectively. Vonda DenBoer CEM President Team |
